We were impressed with the school and its ethos. The staff we met informed us that an individual education plan would be drawn up to meet Ben's specific needs and showed great knowledge and expertise in the perceptions of his requirements, which we found most reassuring.
We were very impressed with so many of the attributes of the school such as the pacing of work, the integration of social needs alongside educational needs, the high staff/pupil ratio, the enthusiasm shown by pupils, and the intangible attributes such as the caring atmosphere, the warmth and empathy shown by everyone we met. We feel sure that anyone who visits the school will experience a radical change in their perception of education for children and young adults with learning difficulties.
Ben had undergone a rather traumatic time prior to arriving at the Sheiling School at the age of 15. His confidence, which had always needed boosting, was at an all-time low and he had no interest in even attempting anything because of the fear of failure.
Nothing short of a total transformation has taken place in Ben since being at the school.
His confidence has improved dramatically and he is achieving great satisfaction (and giving great joy to us lucky recipients of his craftwork) from the marvellous work he has undertaken - particularly in respect to basketry and weaving. It is wonderful to see such changes in him.
The whole of his past school life had left him feeling a failure, yet in the short time he has been at the Sheiling School he is now blossoming and presenting a changed attitude to the world, confident in his ability to achieve his aims successfully.
Of particular note is the school ethos of holistic (i.e. all round) education that nurtures all aspects of human development, which has enabled Ben to get a fuller understanding of the wider social setting and his place within it, and this will be of lasting benefit to him. I sometimes fear that I am becoming a 'Sheiling School bore', in that I cannot sing the praises of the school highly enough, but when parents of other children also have had extremely similar experiences, I realise that it is a success story that is repeated throughout the school on a constant basis."
