When we took Paul to start school, we were tortured by feelings of guilt, sadness and confusion. We were leaving our son with people whom we had never met before and in a place which Paul had visited only once.
Paul is always so happy when we visit him or talk to him on the telephone. He is never upset when we say 'goodbye' after a visit or when he returns after a holiday. Indeed, when he is home for the holidays, he cannot wait to get back to school! He positively thrives on the daily routine of the school and loves all the people in the school community. He speaks excitedly about his care-workers, friends and teachers.
As parents, we will probably never fully come to terms with the fact that our child has had to go to boarding school. However, we are comforted by Paul's happiness and the progress he has made in such a short time.
Gone are the days when we would attend review meetings and listen to negative comments about Paul, about what he could not do, or about how he had to be removed from the class in order to allow the others to get on. At Paul's last review meeting, all the statements made about him were positive. What more could we ask for?
The Sheiling School has provided our son with an education appropriate to his complex needs, in an idyllic, beautiful location. The wonderful staff could not have done any more to ensure Paul's happiness. This has enabled us to come to terms with the emotional trauma of sending our child to boarding school."
