Before our son commenced at the school he had been temporarily excluded from the unit he attended because of periods of violent and uncontrollable behaviour. He has a rare syndrome with many physical problems and substantial learning difficulties including autistic tendencies. As a result he has poor communication skills and was very anxious and isolated. He had no friends and had a very restricted life. The previous school environment was clearly not right for his needs.
After two years at the Sheiling School the difference in him is very marked. We could write copiously on this but the main changes are that he is happier, more secure, more stimulated, has an appropriate peer group, has made friends and is less anxious due to a regular routine.
He has also made huge strides in his educational and social skills. When he is at school he seems to be very happy and when he comes home he is no longer so angry and restless.
As for us, it has transformed our lives. It was only after our son had been at the school for a time and we had our first break for many years that we realised just how near to breaking point we had been. We are able to spend more time with our other children and each other now. We really enjoy his company when he comes home for holidays as he is so much easier to look after now and we are not so stressed and tired as we used to be.
We have so much to thank the Sheiling School for and only wish that we could have been courageous enough to have sought this kind of help and support before a crisis was reached."
