The school affirms a non-denominational Christian ethos and offers weekly services. These are intended to help the young person to be at home with his or her inner self and to reach up to what is spiritual within each one of us, no matter what the disability.

We celebrate the Christian festivals of the year in community gatherings, shared meals, plays and music.

To overcome the modern distance from nature our festivals also mark the cycle of the seasons and their effect in nature and upon human life, such as at harvest time when we can give thanks for the fruits of the land.

We welcome children and young people (and staff members) from all cultural and religious backgrounds. Our ethos is inclusive and international in outlook.  The school currently includes children and staff who originate from south Asia, the Caribbean and the Far East, as well as the U.K. and other European countries.

Leisure time after school and at weekends is devoted to free play, organized games, gardening, walks in the surrounding countryside and other outdoor pursuits.  Pupils are encouraged to use their time in activities appropriate to their age.

The town centre of Thornbury is a short walk from our front gate.  Pupils go there for regular shopping trips, local events and to use the library.  We are well known in the town and the local people are friendly and helpful.  The senior pupils enjoy visits to the cinema, or to the pub for a meal or to watch football.  This helps them to integrate into wider society and often translates into more acceptable behaviour on family outings during holidays.

Nutrition is given a high priority.  Our biodynamic farm and walled garden provide a regular supply of milk, meat and a wide variety of fresh vegetables.   Pupils enjoy the daily walk to the farm to collect the milk and see the cows, calves, pigs and piglets, sheep, lambs, ducks and horses.

The school follows well-documented policies on all aspects of child care and protection.  Effective policies are in place covering health and safety, food hygiene, equal opportunities, challenging behaviour, physical restraint, bullying, sanctions and confidentiality. The recent annual inspection by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) in October 2006 resulted in the award of the highest possible overall rating of Excellent.

Why choose a residential placement?

A residential placement is not for everyone, but why is it so successful for our children?   Perhaps the answer lies in what parents of our children have so often pointed out.  At home parents have busy lives and other responsibilities, while here we have staff who can more easily work with their child at the pace required for the child to learn, and the pupils experience a therapeutic flow of life and learning which carries them along, bringing, little by little, new skills and growing self-awareness.
