There is an induction assessment after six weeks. A Foundation Year certificate is awarded to all participants after one full year of work.
There are also artistic activities and regular cultural and social events around the Christian festivals of the year.
A Working Handbook
You will receive a Co-worker information pack which will cover all aspects of life and work in the community, health and safety requirements, fire regulations, first aid and guidelines on aims and objectives in working with the children.
Pocket Money
New co-workers receive pocket money of £50 per week, including during holiday periods. This is paid each calendar month. The cost of food, lodging and basic living expenses are covered by the school.
What you should bring with you
Please bring adequate clothing for work and for formal and social occasions. Please also bring waterproof boots. Swimwear is needed for helping in the school swimming lessons (as this is a school for young people with special needs would female co-workers please bring one piece swimwear).
You are very much encouraged to bring any musical instruments which you might wish to play.
Health Concerns
Any serious illness or other condition that is likely to affect your capability to work must be made known to us in advance. If you are not in good health you should consider whether you should apply.
Anyone who uses drugs will not fit into the school community and should not apply.
Medical Treatment
While you are a co-worker at the Sheiling School you can receive routine medical treatment free of charge through the National Health Service. All co-workers should, however, continue to be covered by insurance in their home country in case medical attention is needed while you are there during a holiday period.
Dental Treatment
The National Health Service does not include free dental treatment and this cannot be paid for by the school. Please ensure that you have a dental inspection and any necessary treatment completed before you arrive in England. Only emergencies can be treated by the local dentist in Thornbury.
Audio Equipment
Audio equipment may be used in your room as long as it does not disturb others. There are DVD players for recreational use.
Language
In order to be able to work with our students and to take part appropriately in training all co-workers are expected to have a good working knowledge of English before they arrive.
First Aid
All new co-workers are expected to have completed a course in basic First Aid before they come to the school.
Sunday Services
Co-workers need to accompany children and adolescents to school services, to provide help and support. Of course, questions concerning the religious life can be freely discussed with any member of the community.
In Conclusion
The essential attributes for any new co-worker are openness to a completely new experience and the wish to be of service to those with special needs. It is our experience that young volunteers, our pupils and their families often forge a lasting bond which enriches all their lives.
